Like Any Living Thing Statement
Through whimsical ceramic sculptures and felt tapestries the series Like Any Living Thing investigates precarity, uncertainty and the emotional landscape of living with debt.
The works in Like Any Living Thing are inspired by vessels that don’t quite function as expected. From exaggerated handles to disproportionate scales, these sculptures feature forms that suggest utility but fail to deliver. Their surfaces are influenced by the visual language of tabletop games, echoing bureaucratic hoops that debt holders navigate in everyday life. I squeeze, pull, twist, rub, poke, and agitate, as I intuitively manipulate clay and woolen fibers. Experimentation and layering are central to this practice. The works are the result of improvisation, each step building in response to what came before.
The exhibition delves into the emotional uncertainty of living with debt—an experience shared by millions in the United States when paying for basic needs such as medical care, housing, and education. Debt is a way of living, one that creates both opportunity and limitation for its holders. Like Any Living Thing is a physical manifestation of the weight of debt, giving form to an elusive and invisible personal burden.
